My students for Principles of Business and Finance have been working on Understanding Professional Development. They have learned about building their human capital and what it means to have transferable skills. Some students don't realize they have been developing these skills since elementary school but didn't have a name to pin to it. We have discussed the various ways to help them become college ready and career ready.
Having conducted well over 500 interviews in my career allowed me to share with my students what to do and what not to do from the beginning process of applying for a job to preparing one's self for the interview (and everything in between such as resume writing and cover letters). Students also learned the importance of utilizing action verbs and behavioral interview questions.
On Tuesday, October 23rd, I am partnering with Dr. Hake from Catawba College where we will round out our discussion as students critique one another's resume in pairs, have group discussion regarding character traits, documenting positive stories, consider their own life's experiences and how they can reinterpret or positively interpret experiences.
